10, 2008: Constituent Assembly Election
The
Communist Party of Nepal (Maoist) has secured 220 seats (36.6%) of the
total 575 seats under the First-Past-the-Post (FPTP) and the Proportional
Representation Systems. Nepal 's Constituent Assembly comprises 601 seats.
26 seats will be nominated by the government.

Central
Committee of the CPN-Maoist instructed Maoist cadres and YCL (Young Communist
League) not to engage in acts of violence during the Constituent Assembly
election. "The Maoists will respect any verdict of the masses through the
election," CPN-M chairman Prachanda said.

has completed the second stage of the registration and verification
process.
>The
full total verified as members of the Maoist army is thus 19,602,
comprising 15,756 men and 3,846 women. 18,923 of these personnel were verified
in the second phase as members of the Maoist army.

The
Seven-Party Alliance has reached a 23-point agreement. Many of the commitments
in the new agreement have been made before: release of payments to Maoist
combatants, discharge of those disqualified in verification by UNMIN, and
deliberations in the special committee to consider the supervision, integration
and rehabilitation of the Maoist combatants.
A
commitment was made to a federal democratic republic and the modification
of the electoral system.

Maoist
rebels have taken their seats in a new interim parliament in Nepal under
a historic deal ending 10 years of war. 83 Maoist MPs took the oath
in the 330-seat assembly.

The
ruling seven-party alliance SPA and the Maoists agreed to promulgate the
interim constitution on January 15, 2007.

11, 2007: Interim Paliament
Top
leaders of the four major political parties reached an agreement to share
the remaining 48 seats in the interim legislature-parliament among the
seven-party alliance and the CPN-Maoist. According to the understanding
reached during a meeting held at the Prime Minister's official residence
at Baluwatar, the Nepali Congress, CPN-UML and CPN-Maoist will get 10 seats
each, Nepali Congress (Democratic) six, while Nepal Sadbhavana Party (Anandi
Devi), Nepal Workers' and Peasants' Party, Janamorcha Nepal and United
Left Front will get three seats each out of the 48 seats, initially allocated
for civil society. |
