Development
cooperation between Switzerland and Nepal goes back to the 1950's. Whereas
Swiss assistance in the Himalayan
foothills was initially concentrated almost exclusively on rural
development programmes, projects devoted to bridge and road construction,
sustainable management of natural resources, occupational skills/vocational
training and support for small enterprises became more important in the
1990's. |

Since
1998, with the unremitting escalation of the conflict between the Maoist
rebels and the monarchist state, the Swiss engagement in Nepal has been
more and more focused on peacebuilding and on strengthening governance.
