According
to the independent human rights organisation INSEC
(Informal Sector Service Centre) the eight-year-old insurgency has claimed
the lives of more than 10,100 persons. On
4 August 2004 the organisation has counted a total of 10,112
deaths. INSEC lists only verified deaths.
Of those killed, 268 are children under 17.
INSEC
says the Maoists have killed 3,469 people, while 6,643 have died at the
hands of the security forces. Of the total, 4,141 were civilians, 1,478
were security personnel, about 400 were political workers and over 4,000
were Maoists. The army admits 500 soldiers have died in the past eight
years, and that 1,300 police have been killed. RNA
(Royal Nepal Army) sources said the the army has counted over 6,000 Maoist
casualties in the past two years alone. |
