Die Schweiz ist das 190. Mitglied der UNO. In der offiziellen Aufnahmezeremonie stimmten die Mitglieder der 57. UNO-Generalversammlung dem Beitritt der Schweiz mit Beifall zu.

Die fünf Nachbarländer der Schweiz hatten die Resolution erarbeitet, mit der die Generalversammlung die Schweiz in der UNO willkommen hiess. Der französische Aussenminister übernahm die Aufgabe, die Schweiz mit lobenden Worten in die Völkergemeinschaft einzuführen. Nach einer Reihe von Willkommensreden der Vertreterinnen und Vertreter der UNO-Ländergruppen Asien, Karibik- & Lateinamerika, West- , Osteuropa & andere Länder und Afrika sowie des Vertreters der Stadt New York wandte sich Bundespräsident Kaspar Villiger in den Landessprachen Deutsch, Französisch und Italienisch an die Vollversammlung. Der Bundespräsident erwähnte u.a., dass die Schweiz angesichts von Konflikten, Gewalt und Millionen Menschen auf der Flucht schon lange eng mit der UNO zusammengearbeitet habe. Sowohl Villiger wie auch Aussenminister Joseph Deiss betonten, die Schweiz könne als UNO-Vollmitglied ihre Werte noch besser vertreten. Die Vereinten Nationen hätten dabei den Schweizer Wunsch nach Neutralität verstanden und respektiert.

Die Ziele der Schweizer Aussenpolitik blieben grundsätzlich die gleichen. Ihre Mitarbeit in der UNO will die Schweiz nach ihren eigenen zentralen Werten Frieden, Demokratie, Menschenwürde, Neutralität und Solidarität ausrichten. Die Schweiz sei ein kleines aber selbstbewusstes Land, sagte Villiger. Sie werde ihre Stimme immer wieder erheben, "auch dort, wo sie unbequem sein könnte". Im Mittelpunkt des Schweizer UNO-Engagements soll der Einsatz für das Humanitäre Völkerrecht stehen.

In ihren ersten Initiativen als Vollmitglied will die Schweiz vor allem den Einsatz von Landminen bekämpfen und sich für den Schutz von Kindern in Konfliktgebieten einsetzen.

Bevor Annan vor dem UNO-Gebäude seine Willkommensansprache hielt, wurde unter den Klängen der "Swiss Army Band" zwischen der schwedischen und der syrischen Fahne die Schweizer Fahne gehisst. Auch in der Sitzordnung der Mitgliedstaaten hat die Schweiz nun ihren Platz zwischen Schweden und Syrien. Die Sitzordnung wird jeweils jedes Jahr wieder neu ausgelost.

Between Sweden and Syria, Switzerland has taken its place as a full participating member of the United Nations. Opening its fifty-seventh annual session, the United NationsGeneral Assembly voted to accept Switzerland as the organisation's 190th member. During a ceremony to raise the Swiss flag outside UN Headquarters in New York, Secretary-General Kofi Annan praised Switzerland for embodying what the United Nations stands for - a peaceful and multicultural society built on strong democratic traditions- and noted the country's active and generous participation in the wider UN family. "You bring to us forefront of the UN agenda," Mr. Annan said in his remarks at the flag raising, which also included the participation of Kaspar Villiger, President of the Swiss Confederation, and Foreign Minister Joseph Deiss. "From today, your entry as a full member enables you to make your voice heard across the full range of our work. I, for one, very much look forward to hearing it." In Geneva, which hosts the UN's European headquarters, a number of events were scheduled to mark Switzerland's membership. "Being able to join the decision making in the political United Nations is an important step.

But it won't change our foreign policy. It just gives us a new instrument to pursue our foreign policy," the president of the Swiss Confederation said.

The Swiss FM announced that Switzerland would renovate the room where heads of state wait and prepare themselves before addressing the General Assembly.

Until March, the Swiss had always rejected UN membership, feeling that the country was a special case, and that its neutrality would be undermined by the compromises it would have to make in the UN. Villiger said that Switzerland would remain a "special case", thanks to its direct democracy. Furthermore, he added, joining the UN was on the strict understanding that it did so as a neutral country.
