Olympic Games Athens 2004: Bhutanese archers' results
August 16, 2004

Australia suffered a double-blow and there was joy for Bhutan as the wind swirled on the opening day of men's knockout archery action at the Panathinaiko Stadium. As the 1/32 Elimination Round whittled down the men's field from 64 to 32, the defending Olympic champion, Simon FAIRWEATHER (AUS) and Australia's best young medal hope, David BARNES, were the biggest casualties. It leaves one of the strongest men's archery squads with as few competitors in the last 32 as Bhutan.

Archery is the national sport of Bhutan and after beating the 13th seed Jocelyn de GRANDIS today, Bhutanese archer Tashi PELJOR looks set to return home a national hero.
PELJOR's achievement follows his compatriot Tshering CHODEN's victory over the 11th seed in the women's event on Sunday. Regardless of their performances in Tuesday's 1/16 Elimination Round, both are guaranteed to obtain a higher finish than any Bhutan competitor in the history of the Olympic Games.

Bhutan stole the archery headlines at the Panathinaiko Stadium for the second day in a row while the reigning Olympic champion bowed out.
In the 1/32 Elimination Round, Tashi PELJOR (BHU) emulated his female compatriot Tshering CHOODEN to book a place in the last 32.

In beating 13th seed Jocelyn de GRANDIS (FRA) 161-136, PELJOR became the first Bhutanese man to win a knockout match at the Olympic Games.

Both the archers representing Bhutan at the Olympics in Athens are out of the games.
Tshering Choden lost to Indian ace-shooter Reena Kumari in one of the most thrilling competition. In the beginning, Tshering Choden led the match for most of the time but Reena Kumari gradually caught up and tied at 134-134 points in an 18-arrow shoot-out.

In the tie-breaker, both the archers were given an arrow each which Reena Kumari managed to get the better of the two scoring seven points against Tshering's four.
Tashi Peljor lost by three points (152) to Anton Pryleppav of Belarus.
