Number of schools

Currently, there are 4263 pre-primary/early childhood centres, 24943 primary schools, 7340 lower secondary schools and 4113 secondary schools in the country including private and community schools. Private schools are those schools, which do not receive regular government grants. The numbers of private schools are 2172 in primary level, 1308 in lower secondary and 875 in secondary. Most of the private schools are concentrated in urban areas and in some district headquarters. Community schools are those schools, which are supported, financed and managed by local people or local bodies. The number of pre-primary, primary, lower secondary and secondary community schools are 1057, 1802, 162 and 132 respectively. The numbers of schools in the urban areas are 1223 preprimary, 2373 primary schools, 1343 lower secondary schools and 958 secondary schools in the country.

Student enrolment

The total enrolment at pre-primary/early childhood level is 0.26 million in which 44.5 per cent are girls. The total enrolment at primary level is 3.8 million and the percentage of girls enrolment is 44.8 per cent, whereas the enrolment data of lower secondary and secondary level are 1,058,448 and 449,296 respectively and the percentage of girls enrolment accounts 42.2 per cent in lower secondary and 41.4 per cent in secondary level. Likewise the private primary students are 269,730, and urban area primary students are 445,928. The Gross Intake Ratio is 122.9 per cent in which 117 per cent are girls and 128.5 are boys. The percentage of new entrants at grade one with pre-primary/early childhood development experiences are 7.8 per cent in which 7.7 per cent are girls and 8.0 per cent are boys.

Gross and Net Enrolment Ratio

The Gross Enrolment Ratio (GER) of children in pre primary level is 12.8 per cent with a GER of 11.7 per cent for girls and 13.8 per cent for boys. GER in primary education has reached 124.7 per cent with a GER of 114.7 per cent of girls and 134.1 per cent of boys. The Net Enrolment Ratio (NER) in pre primary level is 10.3 per cent with 9.5 per cent of girls and 11.1 of boys. The NER in primary education has reached 81.1 per cent with a NER of 75.1 per cent of girls and 86.9 per cent of boys. The GER in lower secondary and secondary level are 63.2 with a GER of 54 per cent of girls and 72.2 per cent of boys and 43.8 per cent with a GER of 36 per cent of girls and 51.8 per cent of boys respectively. And the total NER in lower secondary and secondary level is 39.4 per cent with a NER of 33.7 per cent of girls and 45 per cent of boys and 25.5 per cent with a NER of 20.9 per cent of girls and 30.2 per cent of boys respectively in each lower secondary and secondary level.

Number of teacher

The total teachers in pre-primary level are 12737 out of them 40.7 per cent represents females whereas the total teaches in primary education are 96659 and out of them 25.3 per cent represents females and 26678 teachers in lower secondary level and 18846 teachers in secondary level are working in the country. The percentage of female teachers on the total teacher in lower secondary and secondary level are 14 per cent and 7.9 per cent respectively. The total fully trained teachers in primary, lower secondary and secondary level are 14191, 7437 and 8689 respectively. And the fully trained female teachers in the country are 12.2 per cent in primary level, 22.6 per cent in lower secondary level and 43.9 per cent in secondary level. Fully trained teachers are those who have obtained recognized pedagogical training specified for the level.

Ratios on schools, teachers and students

The average teacher student ratio is 1: 20.3 in pre-primary level, 1:39.9 in primary level, 1:39.7 in lower secondary level and 1:23.8 in secondary level. Normally the ratio is greater in the school located in terai compared to those located in the mountain and remote areas. The average number of students per school in pre-primary, primary, lower secondary and secondary level are 60.8, 154.5, 144.2 and 109.2 respectively. The school teacher ratio is 1.3.0 in pre-primary level, 1:3.9 in primary level, 1:3.6 in lower secondary level and 1:4.6 in secondary level, likewise the ratio between female teacher over the school are 1:1.2, 1:1.0, 1:0.5, 1:0.4 in preprimary, primary, lower secondary and secondary level. And the fully trained teacher with student ratios is 1:271.6, 1:142.3, and 1:51.7 in primary, of democratic values and social lower secondary and secondary level respectively. There are 10900 schools in the country without any female teaches.
