Pesar kiras- the choice of wear
Pesar kiras in a variety of colours and patterns were in full display among the crowd attending the Thimphu Tshechu, mostly worn by women between 20 to 40 years.

Many pesar wearers said that they had specially designed and prepared the kira for the Thimphu Tshechu.

While some had hired weavers, others said they bought their kiras from handicraft shops in Thimphu. Few said they had woven it themselves.

"Wearing the pesar kira makes me feel good," said 21-year old Thinley Choden who had hired a weaver from Kurtoe for her kira.

Many wore the pesar kira with a matching silk wonjus and tegos made of brocade (gaychen tego), high-heeled imported slippers and trendy handbags.

Among the older women, traditional kishu and oshom kiras were popular.

"These are zangghos, special clothes we preserve for the occasion. It is very traditional," said 60-year-old Tshewang from Trashigang.

Women also preferred pesar rachus to the traditional ones.

"Previously, ada-rachu, (multic-oloured, striped rachu) was very popular. Today many new designs have come out," said a 57-year old women from Punakha.

Most of the men wore lungsem gho (reddish, vertical stripped gho) or aikapoor gho woven either with wool or silk.

An 82-year old man from Wangduephodrang said that it was an age-old tradition to put on the best clothes for tshechus.

"During the old days, good clothes were worn only during the last day of the tshechu.

Nowadays since people can afford, they wear good clothes right from the start of the tshechu," he said.

Another man from Pemagatshel said that wearing good clothes during the tshechu brought good luck. "It is a special occasion where people get blessings. If you come in your best clothes, it enriches the essence of the occasion," he said.
