The Druk
Wangyal Khangzang Chhortens, a unique cluster of 108 Namgyal Khangzang
Chhortens that spiral up to a main monument Chhorten, was an inspiration
of the royal patron, Her Majesty the Queen Ashi Dorji Wangmo Wangchuck.
Vividly portraying Bhutan's spiritual and artistic traditions, the Chhortens
sit astride a strategic mound that offers a magnificent view of the endless
ridges that roll into the distance towards the majestic snow-capped peaks
in the north.
Structurally,
the monument fits into the contour of the terrain and blends with the natural
environment. It rises as a three-tiered mendrel in the shape of the auspicious
dungkar ekhil (rare conch shell with its coil reverting to the right) with
the rows of Chhortens defining the eternal lines of the mendrel.
Each
Chhorten is carefully crafted out of wood and stone with the proportions
dictated by the ancient legacy of Bhutanese artwork.
The main monument,
dedicated to His Majesty the King, and each of the 108 Chhortens are
proportionately sized to compliment the sacred nye of Dochula, recognised
by Zhabdrung Ngawang Namgyal.
