October 2003
The purjang of the late Gayum Kudroe, Her Majesty Ashi Phuntsho Choden Wangchuck, was held on October 18, the 23rd day of the eighth Bhutanese month, at Kurje Lhakhang in Bumthang. Gayum Kudroe's kudung has leaved Thimphu on October 13, 2003 and has stopped overnight in Wangduephodrang. Accompanied by the royal family, the prime minister, His Holiness the Je Thrizur and monks, the kudung has reached Bumthang on October 14, 2003. The kudung stopped at several places along the national highway to allow people to pay their last respects.

About 45,000 people paid their last respects while the kudung lay in state at Gayum Kudroe's retreat residence in Thimphu. Bhutanese citizens came from all corners of the country to pay their last respects, many of them having served Her Majesty and the royal family over the years.

Foreign visitors included the representatives of Bhutan's development partners and international organisations, leaders and representatives of Buddhist sects outside Bhutan, and friends of the late Gayum. His Holiness the Je Khenpo, Trulkus, Lams and monks from every dzong, monastery, and religious institution in the country performed the zhithro kangsha and lachoe over the past 49 days. His Holiness the Je Khenpo, the reincarnation of Lam Sonam Zangpo, and monks of Paro Sangchoekhor concluded the ceremonies with the lachoe, the auspicious 15th day of the eighth month.

His Holiness the Je Thrizur of Cheri Monastery, Sungtruel Rinpoche, and Gangtoe Trulku performed prayers for the late Gayum Kudroe every day since she passed away peacefully on the morning of August 24, 2003.
